FACT:  WOMEN ARE AT GREATEST RISK OF BLINDNESS OR VISUAL IMPAIRMENT

Prevent Blindness America Launches “See Jane See”

New Online Educational Resource and Awareness Campaign Just For Women

It’s a fact: women are at significantly greater risk of blindness or visual impairment than men.  This is according to the 2012 study:  Vision Problems in the US (www.visionproblemsus.org) which revealed that 66% of those experiencing blindness are women, 61% of those suffering with cataracts are women and 65% of those with Age-Related Macular Degeneration are women. What is the reason for this discrepancy between the genders and why are so few talking about it?  The causes for these conditions, including age, hormonal factors and certain autoimmune diseases, are often very different for women than for men and the precautions and treatments may differ as well.

On October 15, Prevent Blindness America (PBA) addressed these issues with the launch of “See Jane See – Women’s Healthy Eyes Now” an educational campaign dedicated solely to women’s vision health.  See Jane See and the dedicated website, www.seejanesee.org  will offer free information and downloadable tip sheets created specifically for women on a variety of issues across the age spectrum such as Dry Eye, Cosmetics Safety, Pregnancy, Vision and Nutritional Supplements, and age-related eye disease.  Information will also include symptoms, causes and treatment options for a variety of conditions.

BEAUTY AND THE BREAST #BCA

Friday, October 25, 2013
Moving swiftly into Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the award-winning, provocative, raw and touching documentary BEAUTY AND THE BREAST gives viewers a behind the scenes look at nine female survivors coping with the harsh realities of breast cancer as they aim to demystify the disease and blossom in the face of adversity. Sweeping up awards at film festivals around the world, BEAUTY AND THE BREAST sets out to empower and inspire women to feel feminine and sexy in their own skin. YOU CAN WATCH BEAUTY AND THE BREAST  ON DEMAND WITH ALL MAJOR CABLE PROVIDERS.

BEAUTY AND THE BREAST Sizzle Reel: http://vimeo.com/72290842

Having worked with Academy Award winning director Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy), Academy Award nominated director/producer Ridley Scott and Golden Globe award winning producer Tony Scott while also collaborating with Hollywood’s A-listers including Aidan Quinn, Donald Sutherland and Sir Ben Kingsley, actress and first-time director Liliana Komorowska tapped into her experiences with such highly-respected Hollywood legends to create this intimate portrait of the devastating realities of breast cancer. The full-length documentary details the complexities of all the various stages of the disease; following the patients through their spiritual, physical and emotional transformations as they bare their souls and their scars, all while striving to dismiss society’s general perception of feminine beauty and adapt to living with their mutilated bodies while still maintaining strength, grace and pride. Beauty and the Breast is not only invaluable as a testament to human resilience, but it also proves that it’s possible to reach timeless wisdom in the face of adversity.

In addition to her tireless efforts to shed light on breast cancer and its devastating effects, Komorowska is respected for the determined work of her Foundation Liliana Komorowska for the Arts in promoting her Polish cultural heritage in America. She continues her acting career in French, Polish and English while living with her husband and two children in Montreal, Canada.

The Buzz on Vibrators: History and Timeline

Thursday, October 24, 2013
Vibrators, personal massagers, sex toys – whatever you choose to call them, these buzzing products have been around long before the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon.
Vibrators are becoming more and more mainstream as women embrace self-stimulation and take ownership of their sexuality – in fact, 1 in 3 American women now admit to owning at least one vibrator and in what seems to be a new sexual revolution, personal pleasure products have made their way from the discrete shelves of sex shops to the prominent displays of c-store and grocery store retailers across the country. However, these devices were initially invented centuries ago for very different reasons.
LifeStyles Condoms has compiled data in Infographic form that reveals “The Buzzon Vibrators – data telling the unlikely history of these quietly ground-breaking vibrating devices; please find it broken out below, and we would be happy to provide a hi-res image of this infographic in its entirety.

Dress is butter-soft (to-die-for) washed viscose/rayon with stunning embroidered godet moss-crepe insets front and back. Residents around the Country Featured in Reader’s Digest This Month for Being “Breast Cancer Heroes” #BCA

Residents around the Country Featured in Reader’s Digest This Month for Being “Breast Cancer Heroes”

Oct. 9, 2013 – Grassroots groups around the country have made it their passion and mission to give breast cancer survivors the best life possible. Reader’s Digest spoke to these breast cancer heroes in a story in the October issue and online.

Here are their stories:

The Knitters – Laughter and the staccato of clicking needles fill the air at the Tempe Yarn & Fiber shop in Arizona. It’s Friday evening, and volunteers lovingly produce colorful piles of “knitted knockers,” prostheses for women who have had mastectomies without reconstructive surgery. When put in a bra, the knockers—which are lighter and softer than silicone and plastic versions—look and feel like real breasts.
Since its inception three years ago, the group has supplied more than 2,000 knockers to women in some 40 states. The website knittedknockers.info provides patterns for do-it-yourselfers and lists groups that make and distribute the prostheses to women in need.

The Healthy Cook – Ann Ogden Gaffney is the daughter of a master baker and the granddaughter of a chef. But it took two bouts of cancer for her to learn about the therapeutic benefits of eating well through cooking and to pass that knowledge on to others. She decided to launch Cook for Your Life, a nonprofit that provides free monthly cooking classes to cancer patients and caregivers, who learn to cook an entire meal with fresh, plant-based ingredients. Five years later, in 2012, she created the website cookforyourlife.org, which offers cooking videos, a nutritionist to answer questions, and a search engine that organizes recipes based on treatment, side effect, and dietary needs.

The Tattoo Artist – Vinnie Myers, 51, didn’t expect to spend his career tattooing 3-D nipples on breast cancer patients’ reconstructed breasts. He started tattooing to earn extra money as a U.S. Army medic in South Korea in the 1980s and then built up a business in his native Maryland. In 2001, a local breast surgeon first asked Myers to create the impression of real nipples on a patient after her breast cancer surgery. But it wasn’t until Myers’s younger sister was diagnosed with the disease nearly a decade later that he knew this would be his life’s work. His nipples are so lifelike that they fool the eye, which gives women who’ve had mastectomies and reconstruction an aesthetic sense of wholeness.

Think pink – and red! Most common cause of death in women with breast cancer is heart disease-#BCA

Think pink – and red! Most common cause of death in women with breast cancer is heart disease

John Martin.jpg
Prominent doctor reminds women heart disease also kills 10 times more women than breast cancer.

Annapolis, Md. – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but according to a renowned expert there is another ailment even more dangerous to women than breast cancer – heart disease.

Ten times more women die every year from heart disease than breast cancer, says Dr. John Martin, co-founder of the Heart Health Foundation. And the most common cause of death in women with breast cancer is heart disease, Martin says.

“Many breast cancer doctors are now pushing a greater emphasis on cardiovascular assessment as part of the follow-up of patients being treated or followed for breast cancer,” says Martin, who is medical director of the Heart and Vascular Institute at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

To help detect heart disease before it becomes a danger, the Heart Health Foundation’s Dare to CARE program provides FREE heart screenings. Since 2000, the program has helped more than 40,000 patients, which has resulted in literally hundreds of lives saved through early diagnosis of heart and vascular disease. There are 19 Dare to CARE screening sites around the country in Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 health problem for men and women in the United States today. More than half of all Americans will die from complications of atherosclerosis, the root of cardiovascular disease. And one million Americans die of heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disorders every year in the U.S. — that means 2 out of every 5 deaths in the United States, or one life every 33 seconds.

The Heart Health Foundation believes this problem can be dramatically curbed - and it all starts with heart screenings.
And here is an article about a study that came out this year that links breast cancer radiation to higher rates of heart disease:http://www.cancer.org/cancer/news/breast-cancer-radiation-may-increase-risk-of-heart-disease

Cleaning for a Reason’ Gives the Gift of a Clean Home
Non-profit aims to raise awareness and ease the burden of cleaning for cancer patients

during Breast Cancer Awareness Month
As the nation focuses on increasing awareness of breast cancer and raising funds for research during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Cleaning for a Reason is helping make life a little easier for women battling the disease, one housecleaning at a time. The American Cancer Society estimates that 800,000 American women will be diagnosed with cancer in 2013.* Cleaning for a Reason aims to help those cancer patients by taking on the chore of cleaning with the help of Swiffer and Walmart.
“I started this organization when a woman told me she couldn’t afford to have her house cleaned because of her medical bills,” said Debbie Sardone, founder of Cleaning for a Reason. “It’s women, undergoing the physical, emotional and financial rigors of cancer treatment, who need professional housecleaning services the most and we are so grateful to Swiffer and Walmart for helping expand our reach.”
Swiffer and Walmart are partnering with Cleaning for a Reason to raise awareness with pink Swiffer Sweepers, WetJets and Dusters displayed in specially branded pallets. The display features a Walmart associate who is a breast cancer survivor. Through Swiffer, Walmart and Cleaning for a Reason, millions of shoppers will be exposed to the non-profit’s mission and commitment to helping those affected by cancer.
“With this type of exposure, more women will become aware of what we offer and more maid services will become partners to help ease the burden of these brave women who are in the fight of their lives,” added Sardone.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month creates a natural opportunity for Cleaning for a Reason to raise awareness of their mission to ease the burden of household chores for women. Currently, there are more than 1,000 maid services in U.S. and Canada who volunteer their time and services to provide free professional cleanings. They “bring meaning to cleaning” by providing more than 13,000 free housecleanings to date, allowing women to focus their energy on fighting cancer. Maid services that want to volunteer and cancer patients who would need free cleanings can sign up at www.CleaningForAReason.org
About Cleaning for a Reason
Cleaning For A Reason strives to aid women who are battling cancer by teaming up with cleaning services across the U.S. and Canada. Together, these two forces offer free maid services to meet the needs of women, and since 2006 have donated up to $3.7 million in free services. Based in Lewisville, Texas, Cleaning For A Reason works with more than 1,000 residential cleaning services and continues to grow and gain support. I'm Juan Miguel Mejía Caillahua, born June, 30, 1978 in Lima. I'm a self-taught and impassioned artist, satisfied with the wonderful artistry I carry in my hands. I was only a 13 year-old child when I began to make my own toys, especially gargoyles. I used to tear apart other toys and use their components to create my own versions. That's how I got into making sculptures, but this time recycling mechanical parts. At that time, I was also very much into music and played on my dad's guitar. I composed about 30 original tunes for my heavy metal band.

I've been there, when you're in your twenties and broke you'll do anything and I did! Here's my story and I'm sticking to it. When I was in my mid-twenties I took a job as a phone sex operator. I actually hated my job, but  it paid the bills and put food on the table. I'm not proud of my "broke girl" job, but if I had to do it again, I would!

What's your favorite 2 Broke Girls moment?

Get excited 2 Broke Girls, their back at their new time! 2 Broke Girls has moved to a NEW TIME - Mondays at 8:30/7:30 c on CBS.

ABOUT 2 BROKE GIRLS
2 BROKE GIRLS is a comedy about the unlikely friendship that develops between two very different young women who meet waitressing at a diner in trendy Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and form a bond over their dream of one day owning their own successful cupcake business.  Only one thing stands in their way – they’re broke.  Sarcastic, street-smart Max Black met the sophisticated, school-smart Caroline Channing when the uptown trust fund princess was having a run of bad luck due to her father’s Wall Street scandal, which caused her to lose all her money and forced her to give waitressing a shot.  At first, Max sees Caroline as an entitled rich girl, but she’s surprised to find that Caroline has as much substance as she does style. When Caroline discovers Max’s knack for baking amazing cupcakes, she visualizes a lucrative future for them and they begin to save money to reach their start-up money goal of $250,000.  As the girls’ cupcake tally expands week-to-week, they become closer to their goal and to each other.  At the diner they are surrounded by their offbeat, colorful “work family”: Oleg, an overly flirtatious cook; Earl, a hip 75-year-old cashier; Han, the eager-to-please owner of the diner; and Sophie, the girls’ outrageous upstairs neighbor. As Max and Caroline climb toward their goal, we see that their “smarts” plus their “hearts” might just be the recipe for success.

Love Your Body Day 2013: Wednesday, Oct. 16 #lybd

Today is Love Your Body Day.  This is my third year to participate. Love Your Body Day is presented by the Now Foundation and is in it's 15th year.

Love Your Body Campaign:
What's It All About?

On October 16 at 2 PM EST, the National Organization for Women Foundation will be hosting a Google hangout in celebration of Love Your Body Day 2013. Moderated by NOW Membership Vice President Chitra Panjabi, our panel will consist of The Feminist Wire co-founder and Virginia Commonwealth University professor Tamura Lomax and Colorado College's professor Heidi Lewis.

Love Your Body: Get Talking!
The first step in moving beyond unrealistic standards of body and beauty is to get talking about the common themes found in media images of women. We must encourage women and men, girls and boys to think critically about the images they see every day instead of passively accepting them.

Love Your Body: What You Can Do

10 Ways to Love Your Body

  1. Indulge on your own terms. Whether it's fresh veggies from the Farmer's Market, or a pint of Häagen Dazs Vanilla Fudge ice cream or loving your body is also about loving your taste buds every once in a while.
  2. Stretch your mind and body. Yoga—gentle yoga that encompasses relaxation and a healthy lifestyle, as well as meditative yoga—can bring one to the consciousness of their unique inner being. Yoga can rejuvenate the mind and body and teach us how to care for ourselves.
  3. Read. It can be a source of entertainment, a way to catch up on current events or an educational tool. Several books have been published on loving your body—get some new ideas!
  4. Throw a private party. It worked for India.Arie and it can work for you too. Take a day for yourself and yourself only. Turn off your cell and log out of your instant messenger. Just spend the day looking in the mirror and exploring your body. Once the celebration is over you'll realize that you learn something new everyday.
  5. Laugh out Loud. This isn't just an Internet acronym spelled out. It's an action that will do your body some good. Don't be afraid to show the world your smile. It's contagious.
  6. Have safe sex. Loving our bodies is about keeping them healthy and free from diseases. And besides, there's nothing like getting a two for one on Love Your Body Day.
  7. Spend time with your family. Whether it's a pet or partner, your spouse or a sibling, quality time is a must-have in nurturing relationships which in turn nurture and love your body.
  8. Listen to positive music. Developing a theme song can do wonders for your body esteem and your overall outlook.
  9. Develop a creative outlet. Everyone needs a medium to express daily stress and frustrations constructively. Maybe you're a photographer, writer, poet or all three. Maybe you can knit, make shapes out of clay or finger paint. Loving your body is also about loving your mind.
  10. Contribute to NOW Foundation so that they continue to give great ideas through the Love Your Body Campaign (P.S. It's even tax-deductible!). Send us your ideas.
