Disclosure:“I am participating in a sponsored campaign for Beano. I received Beano products and compensation in exchange for my participation. The opinions stated here are my own.”

Turning 50 was no picnic, especially when I found out I suffer from diverticulitis and lactose intolerance. Life's not fair, when I love to cook and love to eat! Just about every food I love is now off my list. No yummy yogurt, delicious veggies, or hearty beans. I felt like I was doomed to a life sentence not being able to eat the foods I loved. I'm from the South and grew up eating buttermilk and cornbread with a big bowl of butterbeans until I was diagnosed with digestive problems. The gas from my favorite foods became unbearable. I also had to give up cheese and yogurt. My stomach couldn't handle dairy anymore.

Of course, I was not a happy camper. Why did my body turn on me? I hated not being able to eat my favorite foods. Broccolli, bell peppers, and cauliflower became veggies on my no gas list. Along with these yummy veggies, I had to strike cheese, yogurt, and buttermilk off my list. Beans were a thing of the past as well  as yummy whole grains That was until, I got the chance to participate in the Beano® Back on the Menu Challenge.

Did you know: In a recent survey conducted by Prestige Brands, makers of Beano®, the majority of women respondents  (75 percent) reported that foods such as vegetables, beans, whole grains and dairy are out of the  question for them because they can pose digestive issues.

Managing Andropause ("Male Menopause") Naturally #sponsored #Andropause

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post with hyperlink.

It is not commonly known that men go through “malemenopause.” Interestingly this term is somewhat incorrect in its meaning. Men don’t menstruate, and since the term menopause means the cessation of periods, the term “andropause” is much more appropriate in describing the changes brought on by aging in men.

So what is andropause? Testosterone is the hormone that provides the masculine traits. Additionally, it helps maintain calm, sex drive, muscles mass and strength, sperm production, red blood cell production, and normal fat distribution. As men age, they start experiencing lower testosterone levels and may start suffering fatigue, irritability, moodiness, and decreased sexual desire and performance.

Women going through menopause usually feel the the effects of their levels of estrogen and progesterone drop gradually over several years during the peri-menopausal period which most often starts in their mid 40's, and culminates with the end of egg production, ovulation, and the absence of menstrual periods; all of which are associated with the signs and symptoms of menopause. Similarly the drop in testosterone in men often happens gradually until a lower level is reached and the signs and symptoms begin to appear.

Remedies for Andropause
The only certain treatment available to treat andropause is testosterone replacement therapy. There are other natural alternatives, mostly lifestyle changes and natural products and other medication, that can help with the effects of lower testosterone or boost testosterone levels to a certain degree.

Consume a Healthy Diet
Energy levels will improve through a more healthy diet. This diet should include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean animal and plant based proteins, low-fat dairy foods, along with heart healthy fats.
Foods high in zinc should also be part of this diet. Studies have shown that testosterone levels can increase in men with a higher intake of zinc. Zinc-rich foods include oysters, pork shoulder, crab legs, cashews and chickpeas.

Physical Activity and Exercise
Engaging in a regular exercise routine can improve mood, concentration and sleep. Physical activity can also increase testosterone levels, as well as muscle mass. A study that was published in “Metabolism”, studied the effects of exercise on the levels of testosterone and luteinizing hormone in older men, and concluded that higher levels of testosterone were present after exercising.

Fennel as a Supplement
This herbal supplement is also sometimes used to treat the symptoms. This supplement is created from the fennel vegetable commonly used in Italian dishes. Caution should be taken with this supplement as it has side effects that can include contact dermatitis, seizures and hallucinations. As with any supplement, you should discuss this with your physician.
If you experience any of the effects of andropause, consult with your doctor and discuss the management of those symptoms that will be of benefit to you.
